‘Round the Farm

Stories, updates, and farm-fresh news from the Farm

When the forecast starts calling for freezing temperatures, ice, or snow, life on the farm shifts into preparation mode. While winter storms in East Texas may not be frequent, we’ve learned that being ready makes all the difference—for our animals, our land, and our family.

At Five Blessings Farms, preparation isn’t about panic. It’s about stewardship.

Caring for the Animals First

Our top priority is always the animals entrusted to our care. Before a winter storm arrives, we make sure every animal has what it needs to stay warm, dry, and well-fed.

Water sources are checked and insulated where possible, with backup plans in place in case lines freeze. Extra hay and feed are staged close to barns and shelters so we’re not fighting ice or wind just to get food out. Bedding is refreshed and deepened to help animals retain body heat, and shelters are inspected to block cold north winds.

We also keep a closer eye on younger animals and those that may be more vulnerable to sudden temperature drops.

Preparing the Infrastructure

Cold weather has a way of exposing weak points. Before the storm, we walk the farm to secure loose items, check fencing, and inspect gates. Generators and fuel are verified, extension cords and heat lamps are tested, and flashlights and batteries are placed where we can find them quickly.

Freezers get extra attention too. After all, they hold months of hard work and food meant for families. We monitor temperatures closely and make contingency plans in case of power outages.

Stocking Up and Slowing Down

Winter storms often bring travel disruptions, so we plan ahead. That means making sure we have enough supplies—not just for the farm, but for our household as well. Firewood is stacked, groceries are stocked, and vehicles are fueled.

There’s also a mindset shift. Storm days tend to slow everything down. Chores may take longer. Plans may change. And that’s okay.

A Time for Reflection and Gratitude

As we prepare, we’re reminded that farming is an act of trust. We do our part—planning, preparing, and caring—but ultimately, the weather is in God’s hands.

Winter storms give us a reason to pause, to be thankful for warm shelters, healthy animals, and the provision we sometimes take for granted. They remind us how interconnected we are with the land and with each other.

The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
— Psalm 121:8

Staying Connected

We’ll continue sharing updates as weather allows and appreciate the prayers and support from our community. If you’re preparing for the storm as well, we encourage you to take care, stay safe, and check on neighbors who may need a hand.

From our family to yours—may you stay warm, safe, and covered in peace during the days ahead.
