‘Round the Farm

Stories, updates, and farm-fresh news from the Farm

There’s a moment every year on the farm when everything changes almost overnight.

The rains come—steady, soaking, and persistent. The kind of rain that soaks deep into the soil instead of running off. And then, almost as if on cue, the land responds. What was once winter-browned and resting suddenly bursts into life. This is what farmers call the spring flush.

It’s one of the most hopeful and rewarding seasons we experience here at Five Blessings Farms.

When Grass Becomes Gold

After a good stretch of rain, the pastures don’t just grow—they explode. Fresh, vibrant green shoots push up through the soil, thick and full of life. It’s not just more grass—it’s better grass.

This spring growth is packed with nutrients. Higher protein, better energy, and incredibly digestible forage for our cattle and pigs. You can see it in the way they graze—heads down, moving slowly, content and focused. They know good food when they find it.

For our cattle, this means fuller bellies, healthier weight gain, and stronger overall condition. For our pigs, it means more rooting, more grazing, and more natural behavior as they take advantage of what the land is offering.

A Season of Abundance

The spring flush reminds us that farming isn’t just about effort—it’s about partnership with creation. We can prepare, plan, and steward, but ultimately, we depend on provision we don’t control.

The rain comes.
The grass grows.
The animals thrive.

It’s a season that feels like abundance after patience.

Stewardship in the Flush

While it’s tempting to simply enjoy the explosion of growth, this season also requires intentional management. Too much grass at once can become waste if it’s not properly grazed.

We rotate our animals more frequently during this time, allowing them to harvest the pasture at its peak while giving other sections time to rest and regrow. This keeps the land healthy, prevents overgrazing, and ensures that the benefits of the flush last longer into the season.

Good stewardship now sets up the entire year.

Why It Matters for You

What happens in the pasture during the spring flush directly impacts the quality of the meat we raise.

Healthy soil → nutrient-rich grass → well-nourished animals → better-tasting, better-quality beef and pork.

It’s a chain that starts with rain and ends at your table.

When you choose locally raised, pasture-raised meat, you’re not just buying a product—you’re participating in this entire cycle. You’re supporting a system that values animal health, land stewardship, and real food raised the right way.

A Simple Reminder

The spring flush is a powerful reminder of something simple:

When given the right conditions, life thrives.

And out here, after the rain falls and the grass turns green, you can see that truth in every pasture, every step, and every bite.
